Inspiration came from a photo of a teenage Afghani skateboarder on Skateistan’s website. Skateistan is an international non-profit organization that uses skateboarding and education to empower children especially girls in Afghanistan, South Africa and Cambodia.

The image evoked in me of a commanding figure of a girl who is competent, capable and in control.

To pay homage and to translate these qualities of the image I started with a pencil sketch and then a pen outline. I decided on screen printing as I had taken screen printing when I was studying at OCAD. Image was then screen-printed on batiked and tie-dyed cotton fabric.
