Through a personal analysis of experiences as a Pakistani woman and Muslim in Canada, my work highlights the disconnect between media representations of veiled women and the formation of identity and culture. This includes appropriation of traditional garments in pop culture and fashion, as well as in propaganda that help create gender stereotypes. Utilizing drapery as the subject, it explores feelings such as isolation and anxiety associated with embodying the Muslim veil in today’s media centered society.
