My sculptural artwork, “Flying While Muslim” addresses the discrimination Muslims face at North American airports. After the events of the September 11 attacks, airports have become places where Muslims are faced with the fear of being racially profiled or subjected to excessive scrutiny. In order to create a safe place for Muslims, my work takes on the form and shape of an airplane, with the exterior surface covered with Muslim prayer mats (Janamaz). My work utilizes the designs on Islamic prayer mats because they symbolize a protected place that is clean and free from harm for praying
